Symptoms of SAD include:

  • A persistent low mood
  • Feeling lethargic and sleepy during the day
  • Irritability.
  • Feelings of despair an and guilt.
  • Craving Carbohydrates and gaining weight.

There are a variety of theories surrounding SAD but it is mainly linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the autumn and winter months.

The main theory is that the lack of sunlight effects a part of the brain called the ‘Hypothalamus’ from working properly. This can effect the following:

  • Production of Serotonin: The Serotonin hormone affects a persons mood, sleep pattern and appetite. Lack of sunlight may lead to lower serotonin levels which can cause feelings of depression.
  • Internal Clock: Your body’s internal clock naturally uses sunlight to time day to day functions such as waking up and going to sleep. Reducing sunlight within the winter months can disrupt this.
  • Production of Melatonin: Melatonin is the hormone that makes you feel sleepy, SAD may cause the body to produce more of this.

We would recommend visiting your GP if you are struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Your GP will be able to carry out a mental health assessment and recommend available treatments. Also keeping active, going outside in natural sunlight, keeping warm, eating healthy, socialising with family and friends are all measures you can take to improve symptoms.
We usually recommend a course of 8 LED Therapy treatments spaced one week apart to achieve the best results.
Prior to any treatment we will invite you to the Aesthetic of Liverpool clinic for an initial consultation where we you will be able to discuss your concerns and what you are hoping to achieve from treatment. We will then be able to establish what treatment is best suited for you.
